FM Synthesis Basics (E-Piano, Bells, Percs)

Finally, a quick look at FM synthesis (using Phase-4). Digital piano sounds, bell sounds, and percussion aren't that different from each other. Here’s how you can tackle that with FM synthesis.

Classic FM E-Piano (38:38)

  1. You need two Sine wave oscillators (called "Operators").
  2. Operator 1 (Carrier): This is the one you hear.
  3. Operator 2 (Modulator): This one modulates the frequency of Operator 1.
  4. Set Operator 2's Ratio to a high, harmonic number (e.g., 11, 13).
  5. Apply a decay envelope (no sustain) to the level of Operator 2. This creates the metallic "tine" sound at the start of the note.
  6. Apply Velocity to the modulation amount (the level of Operator 2). This is key: when you play soft, it's a gentle sine wave. When you play hard, it gets bright and metallic.
  7. Add Reverb and a slight Pitch Wobble (vibrato).

FM Bell & Percussion Sounds (42:38)

  1. For Bells: Use the same E-Piano technique, but use odd and inharmonic ratios (e.g., 6, 13) to create metallic, bell-like tones.
  2. For Percussion: Use very short decay envelopes on your modulators. Explore inharmonic ratios and add Distortion or Overdrive to create unique percussive hits.
