Synthetic Risers and Water Drops (Tipper Style)
You can create essential FX sounds with just noise and a filter.
Simple Noise Riser (23:42) #
- Start with a White Noise oscillator.
- Add a Bandpass filter with a high Resonance.
- Automate the Filter Cutoff frequency, sweeping it from low to high to create a classic transition riser.
Laser / Water Drop FX (24:14) #
- Start with White Noise.
- Use a steep Bandpass filter (like a BP8) with a ton of Resonance. This creates a "pew" or "whistle" sound. (24:14, 24:22)
- Turn Key Tracking OFF.
- Use a Filter Envelope to modulate the Filter Cutoff. Set the envelope to have a steep, fast attack and a short decay. (24:38, 24:54)
- This is the key: Use a Randomizer (S&H) modulator and assign it to the Filter Cutoff starting position. Now every note will trigger the "pew" at a different frequency. (25:26)
- You must "dial it in" by finding the sweet spot for the filter cutoff, resonance, and envelope times. (25:59)
- (Pro Tip) Use a more advanced Envelope Shaper (like Bitwig's Segments) to get a steeper, more "plucky" curve, which creates a much more realistic water drop sound. (27:54)
- Add Convolution Reverb and Delay to make it "wet." (29:49)
