Mix, Route, and Control the System
Once several layers play together, the patch needs its own small mixing structure. The aim is not a finished master. The aim is clear balance, safe headroom, one shared space, and a few controls that change the patch without searching through every block.
The Idea #
Keep three paths visible:
sound layers -> dry mixer ------------------------\
-> individual sends -> shared effect -> final mixer -> Audio Out
Every layer keeps its local level. The dry mixer combines the direct sounds. A separate send path lets selected layers share delay or reverb.
Balance the Dry Layers #
- Open

- Keep every local Gain - dB before the mixer.
- Start with kick and bass, then add melody, hat, and texture one at a time.
- Leave several decibels of headroom at the mixer output.
Use filters inside the sound layers to create space before reaching for more effects:
- keep kick and bass focused in the low range;
- high-pass hat and texture;
- shorten envelopes when several sounds overlap continuously;
- avoid multiple bright layers in the same octave.
Build a Shared Effect Send #
- Branch the melody and texture outputs before the dry mixer.
- Give each branch its own Gain - dB as a send level.
- Combine the sends in a second small mixer.
- High-pass the combined send so low frequencies do not fill the reverb tail.
- Add delay, chorus, reverb, or a small custom Grid effect chain.
- Add a wet-return level after the effect.
- Mix the wet return with the dry mixer output in a final mixer.
- Send the final mixer through the master Gain - dB to Audio Out.
The kick and bass can remain mostly dry while melody and texture share the same space.
Add Four Useful Controls #
Place four Value modules near the output and label them clearly:
- ACTIVITY offsets or scales the automatic
DENSITYsignal before it reaches Chance modules. - MEMORY controls how strongly the melody uses current versus older Shift Register values.
- SPACE controls the combined effect-send or wet-return level.
- MASTER controls the final output level through a Level Scaler or the final Gain - dB.
Map each control to a limited musical range. SPACE at maximum should not flood the low end. ACTIVITY at minimum should leave a simple pulse instead of breaking the clock. MEMORY at minimum should select the current pitch.
Do not expose every parameter. A performance control is useful when one movement changes a recognizable aspect of the complete system.
Checkpoint #
Test the four controls at their minimum, middle, and maximum positions. Confirm that:
- dry balance remains understandable with the effect muted;
- SPACE changes wet level without changing dry level;
- ACTIVITY changes optional events but leaves the timing backbone running;
- MEMORY can return the melody to the current note;
- MASTER can silence the complete patch cleanly;
- the final output keeps headroom during the busiest section.

Common Problems #
The reverb becomes muddy #
High-pass the send, shorten long envelopes, and reduce the bass and kick sends before changing the final EQ.
One macro causes extreme changes #
Scale it locally before every destination. One global control can have a different range for hats, texture, memory, and effects.
The limiter works constantly #
Lower the layer gains and final mixer. The limiter should catch accidents, not define the normal level.
The patch is difficult to control #
Remove mappings until each control has one clear meaning. Four strong controls are more useful than twelve unrelated ones.
Extend the System #
Add a named Modulator Out for one slow structural signal if you want it to control a device in Post FX. Use wireless routing sparingly and name every exported signal so the hidden connection remains understandable.
