Exploring the Evolving Paths preset in Bitwig Studio

Tutorial | Feb 23, 2020

In this video, I introduce the Evolving Paths preset and demonstrate how it works in Bitwig Studio. The preset uses the XY instrument, which features four samplers, each with 40 samples that can morph between states. I explain how to use the mod wheel to change the position in the sample and how to select different samples for each of the boxes. The preset is available for purchase on Gumroad or for free for supporters on my Patreon page. Overall, it's a fun and affordable tool to experiment with and create unique sounds.

Questions & Answers

Maybe you dont watch the video, here are some important takeaways:

1. What is the Evolving Paths preset and how does it work?

The Evolving Paths preset is a Bitwig Studio preset created using the XY instrument which features four boxes, each containing 40 samples in textures mode. The samples were created with morphing in mind, allowing you to change the tonality of a sample without losing too much similarity. The preset allows you to select different samples for each of the four boxes, and you can use the mod wheel to morph between different states. You can also use modulation with the amount to morph between the boxes with the random modulator, allowing you to go as slow or fast as you want.

2. How can I save money on Bitwig Studio and Upgrade plans, and support your channel?

You can save money on Bitwig Studio and Upgrade plans by going to the creator's webpage and using the link to the Bitwig Store, and then applying the creator's code to save 10% on the regular price. This code allows you to support the channel and its content while saving you money.

3. How can I access the Evolving Paths preset, and what does it cost?

The Evolving Paths preset is available on Gumroad for just one bug. If you are a supporter of the channel via Patreon, you can get it for free. The preset is easy to load up and experiment with, and allows you to create multiple paths with its 40 available samples in each of the four boxes.

4. Can I create my own variations with the Evolving Paths preset and share them with others?

Yes, you can create your own variations of the Evolving Paths preset and share them with others. The creator welcomes feedback and creations made with the preset, and encourages viewers to send them in. With 2 million possible combinations just with the preset, the possibilities for variation and experimentation are endless.

[00:00.000] Hey, welcome back to a new video.
[00:08.040] Today I want to talk about this preset, it's called Evolving Paths and I want to show
[00:13.560] you what you can do with it and how you can get it.
[00:22.000] If you want to save some money on Bitwig Studio and the Upgrade plans and you want to support
[00:27.160] my channel and my content, then go to my webpage, use the link to the Bitwig Store, use
[00:32.360] my code and save 10% on the regular price.
[00:38.760] So let's stop actually the playback here so we can talk about the preset.
[00:44.800] And yeah, as you can see, I used for the preset, I used a pretty unusual instrument of
[00:53.360] Bitwig Studio, the XY instrument and with this instrument you get 4 boxes here, CD, A
[01:00.800] and B and in each of these boxes there is an sampler and in the sampler, it's all the
[01:07.720] same setup here so every sampler is the same.
[01:11.160] So in every sampler I have the same multi patch, multi-sample patch and when we open this
[01:17.080] up you can see I have 40 samples here inside and all of these samples have also multiple
[01:23.960] states so they are basically generated with morphing in mind so we can use the textures
[01:33.720] mode here so every sampler is in textures mode and you can scan through the sample and
[01:39.200] change the tonality of the sample without losing too much similarity.
[01:46.080] So it's basically made for morphing so when we turn down here the FX dial so we can
[01:55.800] hear the sound better what the actual sample sounds like and we turn down the amount here
[02:01.160] so the morphing between the boxes is stopped so we can go with this dot here to one of
[02:07.920] the samplers so we use A here and I can show you how this works for one sampler.
[02:14.960] So in this state now we only use one sampler and I can press something on my keyboard
[02:20.280] here and you can hear the sample playing in textures mode and it's already pretty, yeah
[02:34.360] it's randomized in terms of the playback.
[02:42.280] So then you can use the mod wheel of the keyboard to change the position in the sample.
[02:53.240] I can switch it to my second camera so I can see it better.
[03:12.120] Okay so this is one sampler so this is the A box so when we switch here over to D you
[03:17.080] can hear there's a different sample selected.
[03:28.160] And you can also use the mod wheel to morph between different states.
[03:38.880] So then we can hear go to the C box there's also a different sample selected.
[03:52.440] Then we can go to B there's also a different sample and then we can go back to the initial
[04:03.200] state in the middle where we have our samples at once and we can use the mod wheel to
[04:13.400] scan through all of these samples at once.
[04:26.600] So and then you can of course use here the modulation with the amount when you can morph
[04:34.360] between the boxes here with the random modulator so you can go pretty fast or pretty slow.
[04:54.640] When you dial in the reverb on the delay you get nice atmospheres.
[05:25.640] So this is the basic concept of this plugin so you have four samplers and in each of
[05:32.760] the sampler you have 40 samples and you can morph between them and the main thing is
[05:43.680] that you can select the samples for yourself.
[05:46.680] So I've created your multiple pages let's bring this up here.
[05:50.920] So we have the perform page this actual remote controls here and then you can go to the
[05:56.440] sample select page with this button here and you can see we have now four dials here
[06:02.440] for each of the boxes and you can select different samples.
[06:06.800] And it's also pretty nice that you can't see which sample you selected here because
[06:11.880] it gives you some kind of randomization it's also not possible to actually feedback
[06:17.840] to see what sample you selected but in this case it's a feature.
[06:23.520] So you can select different samples here for each of the boxes and have now a completely
[06:27.520] different sound.
[07:28.520] So with 40 samples available in each of the slots here you have I think some 2 million
[07:36.120] combinations possible just with this preset.
[07:39.880] So I created 40 samples you can use and this is one preset you can load up and experiment
[07:47.840] with it and create multiple paths with this preset.
[07:54.600] The preset is available for one bug on Gumroad so it's pretty cheap and if you are a supporter
[08:00.920] of this channel via Patreon you get it of course for free so it's available on my Patreon
[08:07.480] page for all my supporters.
[08:10.480] And yeah that's it I think for this video just a small little Sunday content video for
[08:21.440] you guys and yeah let me know what you think maybe send me some creations you've done
[08:28.400] with the preset it's pretty interesting to me.
[08:31.520] So yeah have fun with it and I'll see you in the next video.
[08:35.000] Thanks for watching and bye.
