I also introduce several new presets: Hard Clip LED FX3 and Hard Clip LED FX3 Sum, which offer band-splitting capabilities and a full-range clipper to prevent exceeding 0 dB. There is also the Hard Clip LED Spectral, offering four bands instead of three, with a focus on spectral processing for zero-phase issues, although it introduces some latency.

Next, I highlight updates to the Auto Level preset, which I created in 2022. This preset automatically adjusts the volume of audio material to reach 0 dB without clipping. To address the issue of unintended amplification of reverb tails or other low-volume content, I’ve added a threshold control with a visual LED indicator to better manage what gets detected for volume adjustment. Additionally, I implemented an amount knob to control the degree of volume adjustment, allowing for more flexibility and nuanced control. The Stereo Link function is also introduced to ensure that both left and right channels are balanced when analyzing stereo signals.

Lastly, I briefly showcase the Auto Level Plus preset, an experimental preset that performs auto EQ and frequency distribution leveling. Despite not being finished, it offers several bands for frequency adjustments with threshold offsets. This preset aims to be a quick mastering solution for beginners or to provide a comparative reference for manual mastering efforts.

[00:00:05] I made in the recent years, actually two of them, Auto Level
[00:00:10] and Hard Clip.
[00:00:12] So the first one is called Hard Clip.
[00:00:16] And I made this here in 2020.
[00:00:19] A lot of people use this.
[00:00:21] And I also use this probably in every project,
[00:00:25] in every drum-based project on the drums, for instance,
[00:00:28] and also on the master.
[00:00:30] So this one here uses the BitAid device of Bitwig Studio.
[00:00:36] And in there, we have here an PCM Clipper.
[00:00:40] That's not over-sampled.
[00:00:42] And it's very clean.
[00:00:43] It's very fast.
[00:00:44] And it has a specific sound to it I like.
[00:00:47] You can see here, anti-aliasing is also off.
[00:00:50] So we utilize this in this preset here.
[00:00:53] And there's also no threshold.
[00:00:55] So this works like this, that you have here an input gain.
[00:00:59] And you push the audio material then
[00:01:01] until it reaches 0 dB.
[00:01:04] And at the 0 dB line, we clip it or we hard clip it.
[00:01:08] So it sounds like this.
[00:01:12] And see here, we have a loudness here,
[00:01:14] or peak level of 12 minus 12 dB.
[00:01:19] So you push here the input.
[00:01:22] Then we reach 0 dB.
[00:01:23] And then we clip.
[00:01:24] And if you don't like that it clips at 0 dB,
[00:01:40] you can say, oh, we increase here the input gain by 10 dB.
[00:01:46] So we reduce here by 10 dB.
[00:01:53] We have basically the same volume as before.
[00:01:55] So the threshold is at a different point.
[00:01:58] But usually I want to push against 0 dB
[00:02:01] with the drums to reach the maximum loudness.
[00:02:06] And yeah, it works fine.
[00:02:08] Or it worked fine, no problem at all.
[00:02:11] So a small thing was always that you never know
[00:02:16] when you clip actually.
[00:02:18] You can hear it sometimes if you push it too hard,
[00:02:20] but you never actually know when something clips.
[00:02:24] So I had to use most of the times here a peak limiter
[00:02:28] to actually see if I reach here the line.
[00:02:34] Right now I know that I probably clip internally here.
[00:02:38] But it was not good enough for me.
[00:02:42] So I created here this new one called Hard Clip LED.

[00:03:11] for an LED clip, and also for this drop down here,
[00:03:16] where you can switch from Hard Clip to Soft Clip
[00:03:19] or Fold and Wrap, so you have different clipping modes.
[00:03:22] My opinion, it's more useful to have this in here.
[00:03:25] So now it works like this.
[00:03:26] We have this flashing LED that shows us
[00:03:29] when we actually surpass 0 to B
[00:03:31] or when some kind of clipping is happening.
[00:03:35] So at the moment, no clipping.
[00:03:39] Now we have here some activity.
[00:03:43] So we know exactly that some of this material
[00:03:45] is kind of cut at the zero dB line.
[00:03:50] And the more we push, the more active this LED becomes.
[00:03:55] So this is the idea.
[00:03:57] In my opinion, it's the perfect indicator
[00:04:01] so you know when you are actually clipping material.
[00:04:04] You can also see here that we--
[00:04:16] yeah, kind of Hard Clip.
[00:04:19] You can see here it's pretty much a ragged angle here
[00:04:22] at the top, right?
[00:04:23] So when we switch this here to Soft Clip,
[00:04:29] you can see now it's completely rounded.
[00:04:31] It's a nice, soft rounded line, right?
[00:04:34] So the Soft Clip, it's Hard Clip, Soft Clip, right?
[00:04:40] And we also have here now Bolt and Wrap.
[00:04:48] So if you think Hard Clip sounds too harsh
[00:05:00] on some drums or maybe you want to use this Hard Clip
[00:05:02] on the bass sound and hard clipping on bass sounds,
[00:05:06] or if you want to have a nice, soft bass
[00:05:08] or a nice, soft kick drum, Hard Clip sometimes
[00:05:11] sounds too much, right?
[00:05:13] So you can choose your Soft Clip then,
[00:05:15] but have the same effect, basically.
[00:05:17] So in my opinion, this is much better to use.
[00:05:20] And I use this now all the time on drums.
[00:05:24] So it's kind of perfect, OK?
[00:05:26] You can use, of course, Ova.
[00:05:30] But here, Ova, I think they have two clipping stages.
[00:05:33] So the first one is a hard clipper and drastically
[00:05:38] over sampled hard clipper.
[00:05:40] And then they implemented your also PCM clipper that
[00:05:43] comes after this hard clipper.
[00:05:45] Yes, so two clippers, basically.
[00:05:48] And it has a different sound to it.
[00:05:51] So if you don't like the sound and also
[00:05:54] if you don't like the bigger CPU cost of this one here,
[00:05:58] I think it draws more CPU power.
[00:06:01] Then you can just use my hard clipper here,
[00:06:03] which utilizes still this bit 8 clipping mode here,
[00:06:08] native clipping mode.
[00:06:09] It's not over sampled.
[00:06:10] It's completely clean.
[00:06:11] It's raw.
[00:06:12] It just rocks.
[00:06:14] And this FX grid in here is basically
[00:06:16] for the hard clipper where I implemented this visual
[00:06:23] that you can see here, this LED.
[00:06:25] That's all.
[00:06:26] So this preset is also free.

[00:06:37] This is the new preset.
[00:06:38] I also implemented here some band splitting hard clippers.
[00:06:45] The first one is called hard clip LED FX3.
[00:06:48] So it's just three bands of clipping.
[00:06:51] It's the preset here in every band.
[00:06:54] And we have here gain knob for each band and the clipping LED.
[00:06:58] So now you can just also, instead of just pure full band
[00:07:03] clipping, you can also increase the gain of these bands
[00:07:07] and do something like EQing.
[00:07:10] So you EQ, you push all these bands to 0 dB.
[00:07:17] And you limit in dynamics.
[00:07:19] Bass to low.
[00:07:24] And if you push everything in here in these three bands
[00:07:44] to 0 dB line, you kind of reach this pink noise
[00:07:49] curve of frequency distribution.
[00:07:54] It's probably technically white noise.
[00:07:57] But if you don't push it too hard here into these clippers,
[00:08:00] you kind of have a nice balanced, cold, flat frequency
[00:08:06] response.
[00:08:07] And it's perfect for drum and bass, drums,
[00:08:11] or for the master even to reach a certain kind of leveling
[00:08:16] or distribution.
[00:08:18] I use it all the time.
[00:08:19] And it sounds great to me.
[00:08:21] So the problem of this preset now
[00:08:24] is that we summarize here three channels that
[00:08:29] have now 0 dB in maximum volume.
[00:08:33] And this results in a summation of, of course, over 0 dB.
[00:08:39] We have here plus 6.5 dB.
[00:08:41] So what we need to do is we either
[00:08:46] need to pull down near these sliders by a certain amount,
[00:08:52] or we actually need here some kind of post FX box, which
[00:08:55] is not available here on this FX3.
[00:08:58] So what I did here--
[00:09:00] so this is kind of handy.
[00:09:02] You can still use this.
[00:09:04] But you probably want to have something like this here.
[00:09:06] Hard Clip LED FX3 sum.
[00:09:10] So this one utilizes a chain container.
[00:09:14] In this chain container, there's, again, this LED FX3 clipper.
[00:09:19] But then at the end, we utilize here, again,
[00:09:21] a full range clipper, right?
[00:09:24] So this does more or less the same thing as before.
[00:09:27] But we have here an additional hard clipper at the end,
[00:09:29] so we don't exceed actually 0 dB here.

[00:09:36] Low end, mid, high.
[00:09:42] And then we can go a bit down here
[00:09:45] with the input of this full range clipper.
[00:09:49] You can see the level here at 0 dB.
[00:09:52] And yeah, we can decide at which stage
[00:09:55] we want to compress more or clip more or less.
[00:10:00] Probably in the mids, you want to have less.
[00:10:02] And then you want to-- in the jump base,
[00:10:04] I usually clip a lot in the high end and low end,
[00:10:07] maybe also not that much.

[00:10:12] But the best thing about this is that you actually
[00:10:15] also level the frequencies in kind of a nice and easy
[00:10:19] and very simple way.
[00:10:21] So it's not like that you need to use an EQ before that, right?
[00:10:24] And you push the frequencies here and there.
[00:10:27] And you just have these levels, and you push it against 0 dB.
[00:10:31] You watch these LEDs here until they slightly start to flash,
[00:10:37] or maybe flash hard.
[00:10:40] It depends on what you want to do.
[00:10:42] But for me, it's a nice indicator here.
[00:10:44] It's also a very simple preset.
[00:10:47] So it's not much CPU wasted, right?
[00:10:50] It's very straightforward, very easy,
[00:10:54] and it gives you a nice sound on drums.
[00:10:58] So this is fine.
[00:11:00] But the problem here is, of course,
[00:11:02] that we have here a band splitter.
[00:11:05] And this band splitter creates some kind of phase issues,
[00:11:10] or let's say phase shifts.
[00:11:12] It's actually not an issue.
[00:11:14] If you know that it's happening, then you can work around it.
[00:11:19] So let's use the EQ Curve Analyzer.
[00:11:22] Let us Generator push this here.
[00:11:26] Phase Suggest, OK.
[00:11:27] So you can see we have here two phase shifts, 90 degrees phase
[00:11:36] shifts here and here.
[00:11:37] And this is the crossover frequency of these two band
[00:11:40] splitters, or three bands.
[00:11:45] And this can be a problem if you do this too much.
[00:11:50] So if you do it on the drums, and then on the master,
[00:11:52] and maybe on another channel, on another bus,
[00:11:54] then you add up these kind of phase shifts,
[00:11:57] and it can sound weird, or with layering,
[00:12:00] you can run into problems.
[00:12:02] For me, it's perfectly fine.
[00:12:05] Sometimes when I have only one on the drums,
[00:12:08] so I have no problems with that.
[00:12:10] If you can't hear any issues, then in my opinion,
[00:12:12] it's completely fine.
[00:12:13] But I know a lot of people out there,
[00:12:15] they are high precision producers.
[00:12:18] They want to have zero phase things in their tracks,
[00:12:24] or projects for some reason.
[00:12:26] So for them, I am basically creating here this--
[00:12:31] or created this hard clip LED spectral preset.
[00:12:36] So this one has no phase problems at all, no phase shifts,
[00:12:42] because it's spectral based.
[00:12:44] Also, additional feature is that we have now four bands
[00:12:47] instead of three.
[00:12:49] And we have here in the post FX also, an full range clipper.
[00:12:55] This sounds like this on the drums.
[00:12:59] Let's push here the low end.
[00:13:01] Then we can go here into this full range clipper,
[00:13:13] and slowly pull it down.
[00:13:18] OK.
[00:13:19] And then you have a nicely balanced pink noise, curvy kind
[00:13:23] of frequency distribution.
[00:13:26] All these bands are limited, or reduced in dynamics,
[00:13:30] or clipped in a way, in a nice way.
[00:13:33] And yeah, you don't need to add EQ or stuff like this,
[00:13:37] because you take care of most of the rough EQing
[00:13:40] with this preset.
[00:13:46] So it's EQing and clipping at the same time.
[00:13:49] But here, it's a spectral clipper.
[00:13:51] So we introduce latency, 45 milliseconds.
[00:13:55] That's a drawback.
[00:13:56] You always have to pay in one way or another
[00:13:58] with certain tools.
[00:14:00] It is how it is.
[00:14:02] And if you value phase over latency,
[00:14:06] then that's probably the preset for you.
[00:14:10] So this is the LED spectral.
[00:14:11] So we have LED spectral, FX3 sum, then the normal FX3,
[00:14:16] and the hard clip LED.
[00:14:18] So four new presets, completely free.

[00:14:32] Another preset is my auto level preset.
[00:14:37] And I made this here also in 2022.
[00:14:42] And it works like this.
[00:14:43] I give you a rough idea what this does.
[00:14:46] I have an input volume, or let's say an audio material,
[00:14:52] going into auto level.
[00:14:54] I analyze this here.
[00:14:55] And then I look for threshold.
[00:14:58] And if some of these audio peaks are over this threshold,
[00:15:03] I use it to calculate actually the distance
[00:15:06] between the maximum peak and the 0 dB line, which
[00:15:11] means everything that goes above this threshold
[00:15:15] will be used to calculate how much volume we
[00:15:18] need to increase this incoming audio signal to reach 0 dB.
[00:15:24] So that's the technical explanation.
[00:15:27] And I show you what it does in practical terms.
[00:15:32] So we have here an output volume, which is very low.
[00:15:35] The master is very low.
[00:15:38] You can see this also here.
[00:15:40] And this auto level now should increase
[00:15:45] the volume of this incoming signal to reach 0 dB.
[00:15:49] So what we need to do here is to pull down this maybe
[00:15:52] to 1, 7, 6, or something like this,
[00:15:57] because this is an 8th note with this BPM setting.
[00:16:01] So this is what I do with drums most of the times.
[00:16:04] Let me pull down here the threshold
[00:16:05] to get some peaks into the calculation.
[00:16:07] And then it increases the volume of the incoming signal
[00:16:14] until it reaches 0 dB.
[00:16:15] And we never exceed 0 dB.
[00:16:17] It's very precise.
[00:16:19] So now we can increase here the volume.
[00:16:27] We push the volume up.
[00:16:28] And you can see it never goes over 0 dB.
[00:16:33] This counter or this auto level of counters basically
[00:16:37] and pushes the volume down.
[00:16:38] You can see same loudness.
[00:16:44] This is now super loud if you switch this off.
[00:16:46] Or if you pull down the volume, again, the volume is 0 dB.
[00:16:57] So the auto level pulls up the volume
[00:16:59] or pushes the volume down.
[00:17:03] With this release time here of 1, 7, 6,
[00:17:06] it's almost like a compressor that
[00:17:08] takes care of the audio signal.
[00:17:10] So it always reaches with a maximum peak of 0 dB.
[00:17:14] So it's almost the same thing as the clipper,
[00:17:17] but without clipping.
[00:17:20] So yeah, this works fine.
[00:17:22] And I made this in 2022.
[00:17:26] And yeah, it's kind of works.
[00:17:30] I use this also most of the times in certain situations.
[00:17:35] But there also was a problem.
[00:17:37] Oh, that's also an auto level fancy I made also in 2022.
[00:17:41] So this one has some additional visuals
[00:17:45] inside of the grid here and some additional remote controls.
[00:17:51] So yeah, I was always using this one.
[00:17:53] So you can see about the detection when you detect
[00:17:56] or when you get some peaks in for the calculation.
[00:18:03] So all you need to do is to make sure
[00:18:05] that some of the peaks go into the detection here
[00:18:08] to get some calculation going to push up the volume.
[00:18:13] But sometimes when you put this on pad sounds,
[00:18:15] or let's imagine you have a snare sound with the reverb tail.
[00:18:19] And the reverb tail is pretty long, right?
[00:18:21] Then you have this problem that the auto leveler actually
[00:18:24] takes the reverb tail for calculations
[00:18:28] and pushes up the volume.
[00:18:29] So the reverb tail is loud and becomes louder and louder
[00:18:32] instead of fading out.
[00:18:35] And this was always a problem.
[00:18:36] So you need to have the threshold.
[00:18:38] You only get in the peaks of the snare.
[00:18:41] And then the reverb or the reverb tail of the snare sound
[00:18:45] then is below the threshold.
[00:18:47] So it doesn't amplify the reverb tail.
[00:18:50] So this is why you need to have the threshold here.
[00:18:53] So here the problem is that you need to go into the grid
[00:18:56] to see actually when you detect something
[00:18:58] or when something is above this threshold.
[00:19:02] So my idea for this was, hey, let's implement actually also
[00:19:05] here some kind of LED for that.
[00:19:08] And also the threshold now is not in percentage anymore.
[00:19:11] It's in dB.
[00:19:13] So with this, we can go down until we have here activity.
[00:19:25] Then we go down to an 8th note.
[00:19:28] This is something like this.
[00:19:40] And with this, you can see, or you push the threshold down
[00:19:44] until you start to see here some activity.
[00:19:46] You don't need to push the whole thing into the outer level.
[00:19:50] You just want to have the peaks, like I explained before.
[00:19:53] So when you have here some kind of reverb on there,
[00:20:03] and the reverb then can fade out slowly without the outer level
[00:20:07] of pushing up the volume.
[00:20:09] So I show you how this sounds like when
[00:20:12] you have the threshold all the way down.
[00:20:13] Can you hear it?
[00:20:21] Pushes basically the reverb tail up, which is not pleasant.
[00:20:26] Yeah, that's not cool.
[00:20:32] So that's why you want to have the threshold here,
[00:20:35] and that's why you only want to get the peaks of the audio
[00:20:38] material here into the detection algorithm.
[00:20:42] And yeah, you can see this here with the flashing LED
[00:20:45] pretty easily.
[00:20:45] OK, that's the one new thing, the threshold here,
[00:20:55] and the flashing LED light.
[00:20:58] Another thing I implemented was now,
[00:21:00] some people requested this, an amount knob.
[00:21:04] So now we have here at the end a transition
[00:21:08] from the initial volume to the volume that the detection
[00:21:15] algorithm calculated.
[00:21:17] So when you pull down the amount knob,
[00:21:19] we actually don't do anything to the loudness.
[00:21:30] And then you can slowly fade in the value of the result
[00:21:36] of the calculation.
[00:21:37] So it's not like a volume fade.
[00:21:40] It's actually a fade between the values, right?
[00:21:43] So we can apply this outer level on more
[00:21:46] softly or more drastically.
[00:21:49] Let's push up here the volume.
[00:21:53] Let's use this more like a compressor.

[00:22:22] I'm not fading between the input volume or the dry signal

[00:22:43] So we can make the input signal mono for the follower
[00:22:48] because sometimes you have a stereo signal, a stereo drum
[00:22:53] signal.
[00:22:54] Maybe I'll use your pan knob and do our pan.

[00:23:05] You can see we detect your only the left side.
[00:23:14] And then the left side is then pushed up to 0 dB.
[00:23:17] And the right side is--
[00:23:19] it's the same volume as before, which
[00:23:23] leads to drastic stereo effects.
[00:23:28] So you can use then here the stereo link.
[00:23:30] You pull this down and then you use basically
[00:23:32] the left and the right channel for the detection
[00:23:36] for the left and the right channel.

[00:23:51] So you can disconnect the left and the right channel
[00:23:54] from the detection and just analyze everything together

[00:24:02] So that's the new auto level here.
[00:24:05] Again, this preset is also free because the old one was free.
[00:24:11] Then I have here auto level plus.
[00:24:14] It's not really finished, in my opinion.
[00:24:19] But I put it also on there so you can download it
[00:24:21] and can try it out for yourself.
[00:24:25] So this auto level just more or less the same thing
[00:24:30] as the FX3 clipper or FX with the four bands split here.
[00:24:37] We have one band, two, three, four, five,
[00:24:40] and a master channel here.
[00:24:42] And we have auto levels on each of these things.
[00:24:46] And I'm using here internally the new cross over splitters
[00:24:52] inside of the grid.
[00:24:53] So I have here an auto leveler for each of these bands.
[00:24:57] And this gives you some kind of auto EQing or frequencies,
[00:25:04] distribution leveling kind of thing.
[00:25:08] And also on the master, there's also here an auto leveler.
[00:25:12] It's doing the same thing.
[00:25:14] And I want to show you here also how it sounds.
[00:25:17] Then there's also a drive so you can clip all the different bands
[00:25:23] also if you want to have some dirtiness in there.
[00:25:28] So now we have here a global threshold again.
[00:25:31] We pull this down.
[00:25:32] You can see some of these bands get now some content, some peaks.
[00:25:39] And you can hear the drum loop here is more or less like--
[00:25:43] has a lot of content in the low ends.
[00:25:45] We peak here first.
[00:25:48] Then the more you pull down, the more
[00:25:52] informations we get here on each of these channels or bands.
[00:25:57] So my idea was let's actually implement here some threshold

[00:30:08] And I want to have everything quickly balanced and at 0 dB
[00:30:13] peaking without having too much resonances going over 0 dB,
[00:30:18] or something like this.
[00:30:19] So a quick mastering solution, something
[00:30:22] I can use to compare maybe the result of this
[00:30:25] to something I did manually, or maybe for beginners
[00:30:30] that have no idea how to actually make something loud,
[00:30:33] or something that peaks at 0 dB.
[00:30:39] So kind of a chain for that.
[00:30:42] So this was my idea here.
