In the latest update (version 4.2), we received a powerful new tool, Channel-16, which expands the creative possibilities with MIDI in our production environment. This modulator allows you to assign specific channels (from 1 to 16) to different nodes and, in turn, modulate various parameters for each channel independently. This feature introduces a nuanced way to control modulation across your devices.
Setting Up and Assigning MIDI Channels #
When you look at a group of nodes playing a melody, you’ll notice that all nodes are initially set to channel 1. The beauty of the Channel-16 modulator is its flexibility, you can assign any node to a different channel as you wish. For example, I can set one node to channel 2 and another to channel 3, while the rest can remain on channel 1. This setup lays the groundwork for intricate modulation approaches.
Practical Application: Modulating Parameters by Channel #
To offer a tangible demonstration:
- When a node assigned to channel 2 is triggered, I can use the Channel-16 modulator to open up a filter cutoff just for the notes played by that channel. Every time this specific note (on channel 2) is played, the cutoff parameter is modulated, making the sound brighter or more open only on those notes.
- Similarly, if I assign another node to channel 3, I could use the modulator to switch that note’s oscillator to a square wave, creating a distinct timbre for notes on channel 3.
This approach makes it possible to spice up melodies by assigning independent modulation behaviors to different notes or groups within a melody, simply by changing their MIDI channel assignments.

[00:00:09] a lot of channels 1 to 16 and what this means is you can define on certain nodes
[00:00:16] different MIDI channels in a modulator with different nodes, different things.
[00:00:23] So to put this into a practical example I have here multiple nodes playing just a regular melody
[00:00:33] and when we select all nodes you can see on the left side here every node is on channel 1
[00:00:39] and we can choose your different channels 1 to 16 and you can say maybe the second node here plays
[00:00:45] on channel 2 and this node plays on channel 3 and now you can go to your Channel-16 modulator and
[00:00:55] you can see every node with channel 2 opens up the cutoff maybe like this
[00:01:00] you can see every time we play this note here we open up the cutoff
[00:01:08] because it's on channel 2 and channel 2 opens up the cutoff pretty simple
[00:01:15] you have also your channel 3 maybe dialing in a square wave
[00:01:20] so every time this node plays here which is channel 3 we switch the policing to a square wave shape
[00:01:31] pretty simple right so you can spice up your melodies for instance by adding
[00:01:44] multiple different MIDI nodes and then use Channel-16 modulator here to modulate different things
[00:01:50] in your devices not only the synthesizer maybe also here effects of course too
[00:01:56] then there's a global amount here where you can dial back the modulation to zero so everything is
[00:02:02] like before
[00:02:13] then there's here of course a lag time where you can yeah smooth out the transitioning from one
[00:02:22] value to the other so when we modulate basically to the cutoff so it takes a bit of time or the
[00:02:30] modulation to go to the full strength right so you can ease out basically the transition
[00:02:36] or smooth out the transitioning
[00:02:39] so it's a very powerful modulator actually and it's a nice addition in the last update
