Bitwig Tips & Tricks
Use Note Names #
On many devices in Bitwig where you can enter frequencies (like Hz), you can also input standard note names and octave numbers, such as C3 or C#4. This allows you to work with precise musical pitches instead of raw frequency values. And it’s not just limited to the EQ, you’ll find this feature on many other devices as well.
Shape EQ Bands Faster with Alt-Drag #
On EQ+, EQ-5, and EQ-2, you can Alt-drag an EQ point to adjust both the frequency and the Q at the same time, while the gain stays unchanged. This makes precise tonal shaping much faster.
Customize and Search Keyboard Shortcuts #
In the settings, you can freely define your own keyboard shortcuts. You can also search through existing mappings or browse all functions that can be triggered via shortcuts.
Open the Commander for Hidden Functions #
Pressing Ctrl + Return opens the Bitwig Commander. It shows all available actions and commands you can execute, even ones without a shortcut assigned yet.
Use the Hidden Tap Tempo #
There’s a hidden tap tempo feature: simply Ctrl-click on the Play button to tap in a tempo without needing a dedicated control.
Drag Tracks from Other Projects #
You can drag tracks or channels from closed projects directly into your current project. Just open the Projects tab in the Side Browser and drag them in.
Quickly Enter a Group Track #
To enter a group track, hold Shift and double-click the track header. This is faster than navigating through the mixer or inspector.
Know Where Your Library Is Stored #
Bitwig stores presets, clips, samples, curves, and more inside the Library folder. This is the central place for all your custom and factory content.
Default Library Folder Locations #
By default, the Library folder is located at
Windows: C:\Users\YOURNAME\Documents\Bitwig Studio\Library
macOS & Linux: ~/Documents/Bitwig Studio/Library/
Change the Library Folder Location #
You can move your Library folder to another drive. Go to File → Settings → Settings → Locations and set a new Library path.
Group Tracks with a Shortcut #
Select multiple tracks using Ctrl-click and press Ctrl + G to instantly group them into a group track.
Group Devices into Containers #
You can also group devices. Select multiple devices in the device chain with Ctrl-click and press Ctrl + G to wrap them into a container device.
Save Complex Setups as Presets #
Bitwig presets are extremely powerful. You can combine an unlimited number of devices into one chain and save the whole setup as a single preset.
Understand the Bitwig Grid #
The Bitwig Grid is a modular synth and sampling environment that’s hands-on, playful, and easy to learn. While it’s not as deep as environments like Pure Data, Max DSP, or Reaktor, it’s incredibly fast and musical. Check my Course for free
