Bitwig Audio to MIDI

Bitwig Studio does not have one single giant button labeled "audio to MIDI," but that does not mean the workflow is missing. On this site, the topic usually means taking pitched audio, converting it into MIDI with a dedicated tool, and then using Bitwig to edit, replace, or extend the result.

What it is #

Audio-to-MIDI means extracting note information from a recording or sample and turning it into editable MIDI notes. That can be useful when you hear a melody in an audio clip and want to replay it with a different instrument, fix mistakes, or understand what was played.

In practice, many Bitwig users do this with external tools such as Basic Pitch and then drag the MIDI into Bitwig. Once the notes are in the DAW, the normal Bitwig workflow takes over.

Why it matters #

This is useful because audio is fixed, but MIDI is flexible. A sampled phrase can become a synth line. A recorded instrument can become a guide for harmony. A rough demo can turn into something you can re-arrange or quantize.

That makes audio-to-MIDI less about perfect transcription and more about recovering useful musical structure.

What to expect from the workflow #

It works best on clear pitched material. A clean vocal phrase, lead, bass line, or simple melody is much easier to convert than dense chords, noisy sound design, or heavily percussive audio.

That is why cleanup still matters. The converter gives you a starting point. Bitwig gives you the editing environment.
