Scrawl
Bitwig Platform
A freely drawable segmented oscillator whose waveform can be edited, randomized, transformed, saved, and loaded as BWCURVE data.
What it does
Scrawl turns a user-drawn cyclic curve into an oscillator waveform. Its pop-out editor can add and transform breakpoints, change curvature, randomize selected values, and exchange BWCURVE files; anti-aliasing is available for complex or discontinuous drawings.

Practical uses
- Draw slowly for many closely spaced points or quickly for a lower-resolution starting shape, then refine the selection in the curve editor.
- Use Chaos, scale, mirror, and duplicate-content transforms to create complex wavetable-like single cycles quickly.
- Save useful shapes as BWCURVE files, or blend several Scrawl outputs to morph between independently drawn waveforms.
Things to know
- The drawing is one repeating oscillator cycle, not a time-based envelope unless an external phase/playback method is used.
- Sharp corners and discontinuities add harmonics; anti-aliasing matters most for bright shapes at high pitches.
- The common oscillator wrapper adds pitch tracking, offset, detune, trigger reset, and phase input around the curve engine.
- No dedicated Scrawl Nitro body is confirmed, so interpolation, anti-aliasing, and BWCURVE evaluation remain host-level evidence.
Technical details
No Nitro implementation has been confirmed for this visible module. The behavior is described conservatively from module metadata and editorial research.
Conceptually Scrawl stores ordered curve points over normalized phase and evaluates the segment containing the current oscillator position. Segment type and curvature determine interpolation; a cyclic endpoint policy closes the waveform. The visible anti-aliasing option must then reduce high-frequency energy introduced by steep segments or discontinuities. The exact curve representation, interpolation functions, oversampling/filter topology, and reset phase are not exposed by the current atlas.
Open questions
- Recover the BWCURVE representation and measure each segment type, endpoint continuity, anti-aliasing spectrum, and latency.
- Confirm external phase behavior, trigger reset ordering, stereo detune, and response to live curve edits.
