Invert

Invert module panel in Bitwig Grid
Invert in Bitwig Grid 6.0.6.

Optionally multiplies the selected stereo channel or channels by -1.

What it does

With the button on, Invert reverses signal polarity. With it off, the selected path passes through unchanged. Stereo-ness chooses whether the operation applies to the complete signal or only the left or right channel.

Controls and ports

Control Label Official description
toggle Toggle Toggles between inverting the incoming signal (when on) or passing it thru without change (off)
stereo-ness Stereo-Ness Which channels are being inverted:

Practical uses

  • Flip an audio signal before adding it to another path to test for cancellation or correct a polarity mismatch.
  • Invert only the left or right channel to create or diagnose stereo difference relationships.
  • Use it as the readable, switchable equivalent of multiplying a signal by -1.

Things to know

  • Polarity inversion is instantaneous multiplication by -1; it is not a time delay and therefore is not a general phase-alignment tool.
  • Stereo-ness offers Mono, Left, and Right processing modes according to Bitwig's Grid signal documentation.
  • Switching the operation on an audio-rate signal can create a discontinuity and therefore a click.

Technical details

No Nitro implementation has been confirmed for this visible module. The behavior is described conservatively from module metadata and editorial research.

For each processed channel, the intended function is y = -x when enabled and y = x when bypassed. Channels excluded by Stereo-ness pass through. The visible wrapper has not been mapped to a dedicated Nitro module.

Open questions

  • Locate the implementation that backs the visible Invert wrapper and confirm whether its toggle transition is smoothed.

Version and sources

Checked against Bitwig Studio 6.0.6. This page combines Bitwig's module metadata, the existing Grid course and guides, and Nitro analysis where the mapping is strong enough to support a technical statement.
