A swept all-pass network with feedback, stereo and curve options, external modulation, and four Character models.

What it does

Phaser+ moves the phase response of a cascade of all-pass stages and mixes that result with the source. The phase difference creates moving spectral notches without relying on the very short physical delay line used by a flanger; Feedback and the four Characters reshape the notch pattern and resonance.

Controls and ports

Character chooses the model. Color sets the filter center region, FB controls resonance through feedback, Speed and Depth drive the sweep, Mix blends processed and dry signal, and stereo/alternate/curve options modify motion and stage behavior. External modulation can drive the sweep directly.

Practical uses

  • Use slow Speed, moderate Depth, and low Feedback for broad movement on pads, strings, or cymbals.
  • Raise Feedback to make the moving notches speak more clearly on harmonically rich material.
  • Drive it with a custom envelope or phase signal for note-synchronized or one-shot sweeps.

Things to know

  • The notches appear when dry and phase-shifted paths are mixed; a fully wet all-pass path may sound subtler in magnitude.
  • Character changes more than a simple color EQ because it configures both the phase driver and phaser processor.
  • Stereo and alternate modes can make left/right notch motion differ and therefore affect mono compatibility.
  • Feedback emphasizes resonant regions and can change perceived level substantially.
  • The previous automatic modulation/Phaser match is a simpler generic phaser; the Plus module's actual wrapper is mod_fx/phaser_module.

A high-confidence Nitro implementation candidate supports the technical summary, but the visible-module mapping remains inferred.

The exact mod_fx/phaser_module wrapper combines a mono phase driver, a stereo/poly phase driver, and a PolyPhaser. It configures Character type, stereo, alternate, external override, and curve; then, for each 4x sub-sample, it updates Center, Rate, external modulation, Depth, Feedback, and Mix. The mono driver supplies phase and scaled center to the poly driver, whose frequency and amplitude feed the all-pass processor. This proves the visible signal/control topology, while exact pole counts, coefficient equations, and per-Character nonlinearities stay inside imported implementations.

  • Measure pole/notch count, frequency span, curve law, feedback response, Mix law, and exact behavior for all four Characters.
  • Confirm alternate/stereo routing and external-modulation scaling, replacement rules, and bandwidth.
  • Test latency, magnitude at full wet, mono cancellation, reset state, automation smoothing, and extreme-feedback stability.
