VU Meter
Bitwig Platform
A compact averaging level meter for observing the sustained strength of a Grid signal.
What it does
VU Meter turns a rapidly changing signal into a slower visual indication of average level. It is intended for gain staging and comparison rather than displaying individual peaks or waveform shape.
Controls and ports
Signal In feeds the meter and a through output continues the unmodified signal. The visible meter reports an averaged level; any range, channel, or response options require confirmation in Bitwig's Inspector.
Practical uses
- Balance oscillator, noise, effect-return, or voice layers by their sustained level.
- Compare level before and after a processor while using a separate peak-safe output stage.
Things to know
- An averaging meter reacts more slowly than a peak meter and can miss brief overloads.
- The displayed value depends on the detector and ballistics, which are not specified by the module name alone.
- A meter does not change or protect the signal; use gain, clipping, or limiting separately.
Technical details
No Nitro implementation has been confirmed for this visible module. The behavior is described conservatively from module metadata and editorial research.
A conventional averaging meter rectifies or squares the signal, smooths it over time, and maps the result to a visual scale. Bitwig's exact detector (mean absolute, RMS, or calibrated variant), attack/release ballistics, stereo reduction, and reference level are not represented by a recovered Nitro body; the through path is expected to be identity.
Open questions
- Fit detector law, reference, attack, release, integration time, stereo/voice reduction, floor, overload behavior, update rate, and verify through-port null.
Version and sources
Checked against Bitwig Studio 6.0.6. This page combines Bitwig's module metadata, the existing Grid course and guides, and Nitro analysis where the mapping is strong enough to support a technical statement.
