Attenuate

Attenuate module panel in Bitwig Grid
Attenuate in Bitwig Grid 6.0.6.

A linear gain control for reducing the magnitude of an incoming signal.

What it does

Attenuate passes a chosen fraction of its input. At full Amount the signal is unchanged; smaller settings narrow its range toward zero, making the module useful for audio level, modulation depth, pitch span, and phase offsets.

Controls and ports

Control Label Official description
amount Amount Amount of incoming signal passed thru

Practical uses

  • Reduce a random or LFO signal before using it as pitch or filter modulation.
  • Set the depth of an envelope or feedback path without changing the source itself.
  • Keep a signal inside the expected range of a later module such as a scaler, selector, or waveshaper.

Things to know

  • Attenuation changes magnitude but does not clamp the signal; an already out-of-range input can remain out of range.
  • A 50% setting is linear multiplication by 0.5, equivalent to approximately -6.02 dB for amplitude.
  • The module works equally on audio and control values because both use Grid signal cables.
  • Negative or above-unity modulation and any Stereo-ize option remain unverified.

Technical details

No Nitro implementation has been confirmed for this visible module. The behavior is described conservatively from module metadata and editorial research.

The interface supports the direct model out = in * amount, with Amount nominally expressed from 0 to 1. No dedicated Nitro body has been recovered. Exact control range, clamping, lane inversion under Stereo-ize, and smoothing must therefore be measured rather than inferred from the multiplication alone.

Open questions

  • Measure range, default, typed values, modulation beyond 0 to 1, negative gain, and parameter smoothing.
  • Verify stereo independence and any Stereo-ize inspector option.
  • Test NaN, infinity, signed zero, and extremely large incoming values.
