Bias

Bias module panel in Bitwig Grid
Bias in Bitwig Grid 6.0.6.

A constant offset that adds or subtracts a percentage value from every incoming sample.

What it does

Bias moves an entire signal upward or downward without changing its shape. It is the level-domain equivalent of adding a DC offset and is useful for centering, thresholding, converting control ranges, or shifting pitch values by a fixed amount.

Controls and ports

Control Label Official description
amount Amount Percentage level added

Practical uses

  • Move a bipolar modulation signal into a mostly positive range before using it as a gain control.
  • Shift a generated pitch range around a different center before quantization.
  • Offset a comparison or clipping threshold without changing the upstream source.

Things to know

  • Bias adds rather than multiplies: it changes the center value but preserves the input's peak-to-peak span.
  • It does not automatically keep the result inside -1 to +1 or 0 to 1.
  • Adding a nonzero bias to audio creates DC, which can consume headroom and click when switched.
  • Installed keywords suggest Stereo-ize support, but the exact inverse right-lane offset is not yet measured.

Technical details

No Nitro implementation has been confirmed for this visible module. The behavior is described conservatively from module metadata and editorial research.

The functional equation is out = in + amount, where the percentage Amount maps 100% to +1. A Stereo-ize implementation would conventionally apply the inverse Amount to the right lane, but no exact visible Nitro body has been recovered and that lane rule remains unconfirmed.

Open questions

  • Measure Amount range, defaults, typed values, modulation limits, and smoothing.
  • Verify Stereo-ize, mono cable expansion, out-of-range behavior, and DC handling at Audio Out.
  • Test signed zero, infinities, NaN, and large offsets.

Checked against Bitwig Studio 6.0.6. This page combines Bitwig's module metadata, the existing Grid course and guides, and Nitro analysis where the mapping is strong enough to support a technical statement.
