Bitwig Platform
Expands phase around the midpoint to create a formant-style repeated or compressed traversal.
What it does
Ø Formant treats phase 0.5 as a center and increases the distance of other phase values from it according to Amount. Keeping the result in the phase domain makes a downstream oscillator repeat or compress parts of its waveform, shifting its apparent formant structure without changing the fundamental phase source.

Practical uses
- Place it before an oscillator phase input for formant-shifted oscillator tones.
- Modulate Amount to animate vocal-like spectral movement.
- Combine it with Bend or Pinch to shape where the repeated phase regions occur.

- Its audible result depends on the waveform or table that reads the processed phase.
- Amount is described as formant shift, but its exact gain and musical-unit mapping are not exposed in the current atlas.
- Higher expansion introduces additional phase wraps and therefore more waveform repetitions.
Technical details
No Nitro implementation has been confirmed for this visible module. The behavior is described conservatively from module metadata and editorial research.
The documented contract is conceptually out = wrap(0.5 + gain(amount) * (phase - 0.5)): scale distance around the midpoint, then retain a valid phase-cycle result. This equation is a behavioral model, not a recovered implementation; the current Formant Nitro candidate is an unrelated audio filter.
Open questions
- Measure the exact Amount-to-gain mapping, wrapping at both boundaries, neutral setting, stereo behavior, and non-finite inputs.
