Smooths changes in a phase signal while respecting the circular phase boundary.

What it does

Ø Lag makes a phase trajectory approach its current input more gradually. Unlike a general level lag, it is designed for a cyclic phase domain so a wrap from the end of one cycle to the start of the next does not have to be treated as an ordinary full-range jump.

Practical uses

  • Soften abrupt phase modulation before it reaches an oscillator or lookup table.
  • Create elastic timing movement from stepped or jittery phase sources.
  • Smooth phase offsets while retaining a wrapped phase output.

Things to know

  • Lag is stateful: the output depends on previous samples as well as the current input.
  • Amount controls the time taken to reach the current phase input.
  • Circular smoothing can choose a different path than an ordinary low-pass filter near phase zero/one.
  • Fast modulation of Amount may interact with the stored lag state.

Technical details

No Nitro implementation has been confirmed for this visible module. The behavior is described conservatively from module metadata and editorial research.

The safe DSP model is a slew or one-pole approach applied to circular phase distance, followed by phase wrapping. No dedicated Nitro body is currently mapped, so the interpolation law, shortest-path policy, time units, and coefficient update behavior remain unknown.

Open questions

  • Measure Amount units and curve, zero and maximum lag, the chosen path across phase zero/one, response to discontinuities, and dynamic Amount modulation.
